The Daily Tangles began as simple exercises with gesture as a warm up to painting. I was interested in exploring a charged line in my larger paintings, which were amorphous environments of light and energy. I quickly became interested in a possibility that line infused with color could be both object and space, or subject and the energy in the space around it. Each one of the Tangles takes something from the last one and explores it further, and are finished in one or two quick sessions without much reflection, as a kind of automatic painting.
